About Dan
Dan was born in Canton, Ohio and grew up in a small town in Southeast Ohio. Both his parents were pharmacists and after high school, he followed the family path to Ohio Northern University with the hopes of being a registered pharmacist himself one day. After it was clear that organic chemistry was not his thing, he switched gears and graduated with a BS degree in medical biology in 1997. He went on to graduate with a MS in Exercise Physiology/Adult Physical Fitness from Ball State University in 1999 and has advocated for improving people's health ever since. He has experience working with young adults, athletes, various clinical populations, and generally sedentary individuals interested in becoming more physically fit. Dan was certified as a Certified Exercise Specialist® (the gold standard for exercise in many professional associations) by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in 2001.
Dan arrived at the University of Virginia Medical Center in 2003 and was able to take an existing exercise program for End Stage Kidney Disease (ESRD) patients and develop the UVA Renal SitFit Exercise Program, one that would become a nationally recognized clinical exercise program. Consequently, Dan has been a national speaker on exercise for the National Kidney Foundation, the Renal Support Network, and American Association of Kidney Patients, as well as regional exercise promotion meetings. He has been published in national journals on exercise as well as in the CVille magazine. Recently, Dan was named a recipient of the Paul Ambrose Scholarship, which introduces health professions students to influential public health professionals and prepares them to be leaders in addressing public health challenges.

He's Been There......
A former smoker and drinker, Dan has dedicated his life and career to health promotion, disease prevention, and improving physical activity levels in the community. He used to live a sedentary life and remembers living that life, a life of "unwellness." Luckily, with the help of some friends and some hard work, Dan was able to turn around his lifestyle and now sees himself as an example of moving from the couch to living an active lifestyle every day! He can do the same for you! He understands the struggles of investing time, money and effort to becoming healthier but will show you the tools that worked for him so you can reach the goals you've always wanted to achieve!!
Dan has been a personal trainer for close to 12 years now, working with a variety of individuals and goals. He has honed his skills and trade to create a fitness system that is safe, effective, and fun! In 2010, Dan was awarded a prestigious Paul Ambrose Scholarship from the Association of Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) focusing on advocacy on preventive medicine, wellness, and health policy change.
Finally, Dan is the local volunteer run/walk coach for Team in Training, a fundraising group that raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and remains active in many charitable organizations. He completed his 12th marathon in Dublin, Ireland on October 31, 2011 while raising close to $6,500 for the LLS! He enjoys listening to music on his porch with a glass of wine in hand, playing with his 10 year old pup, Abby, and spending time with friends. He is an AVID Ohio State Football fan and still gives his loyalty to his beloved Cleveland Browns.
